North Cyprus is not included, except on the touring map (where the place names are shown in Turkish). (Sunflower will publish a separate guide for North Cyprus in 2010.)
The book describes car tours and walks from Pafos (Paphos), Lemesos (Limassol), Larnaka (Larnaca) and Ayia Napa; many are also accessible from Lefkosia (Nicosia). Wherever you are based, there will be a walk on your doorstep - or you can use the good transport network to get around inexpensively. This new edition has been thoroughly revised, with some new routes, and all the maps and plans have been redrawn (some based on GPS survey) to show new roads and motorways, crossing points to North Cyprus, and the new long-distance E4 route across the south of the island. The landscape and its people reserve their greatest rewards for the visitor who makes an effort toward closer acquaintance. On foot or on wheels, exploration of the countryside, coupled with a healthy curiosity about local traditions, is an experience to treasure for a lifetime - or, as the Cypriots put, it, 'Once been, never forgotten'. You can stroll for miles along the southeast coast or hike through the woods in the famous Troodos Mountains (stopping for lunch at one of the trout farms). But in recent years most walkers are exploring the far western corner of Cyprus - the Akamas Peninsula, now a nature reserve and the focal point for 'green tourism', where the Tourism Organisation has established some nature trails. (In all, there are 52 nature trails all around the island, some short and easy, others very demanding.) "We used the Cyprus Landscapes book our holiday would not have been the same without it. Thank you very much." (V.B., Welwyn) "We just got back from Cyprus yesterday, where we had a wonderful holiday and did several of the walks in the Landscapes book. We went to Akamas 4 times!!! We've already been to the Algarve and Mallorca with your books, and from now on we'll only book a holiday after seeing if there's a Sunflower guide for the area!" (B.H., Jülich) Best months for walking. Visit the island for walking from March to June or in September and October. Where to stay for walking: The highest concentration of walks is in the Troodos mountains and around Paphos 6 car tours, 45 long and short walks, 15 picnic suggestions
