An ideal introduction for the first-time visitor, this book also provides new ideas for those who come year after year. Apart from marvellous coastal scenery that's been compared to that of Cornwall and Brittany, there is much to explore of the island's past. For example, you could follow some of Guernsey's 'green lanes' and 'water lanes' centuries-old paths once used by pack-horses and donkeys, or follow a route that takes in the relics of prehistoric burial grounds as well as remnants of the German Occupation during World War II. Tim Earl, a local resident and leader of guided walks on the island, also an expert on the island's bird life, updated the previous edition and this new fourth edition incorporates amendments recorded by a member of Sunflower's staff in 2007.

Guernsey's coastline provides challenging cliff paths with steep climbs and lots of steps. Elsewhere the walking is very easy, since the terrain is almost level.

SPECIAL NOTE - MAPS: A particular feature of the book is the fact that the walking maps are full colour reproductions of extracts from the official 1:25000 HMSO island map (equal in quality to UK Ordnance Survey maps). No other guide to the island includes such extensive use of map extracts from this source. The HMSO map is currently out of print and can no longer be purchased but our extensive map coverage of Guernsey's best walking areas plus complete 1:25,000 scale maps of Alderney, Sark and Herm adequately compensate for present day visitors' inability to buy the original O.S. style map which used to be sold on the island.

Best time to walk is in the spring, especially April/May when the spring flowers are out. But walking is enjoyable through to October, and even in the winter months if you don't mind showers and bracing breezes.

Where to Stay: the island is so small that it really doesn't matter where you stay, though if you will be relying on the extensive bus services, we recommend you stay in or near St Peter Port to avoid having to take a bus there to catch a different one each time you want to reach the start of a walk. For walking in the other islands, Alderney would justify an overnight stay (or even a couple of nights) to see all the island offers to walkers, but day excursions to the much smaller islands of Sark and Herm will give you plenty of time to explore them.

"I have just spent a wonderful 10 days in Guernsey. Thank you for making our holiday so much more interesting. Full marks for the format of the book so easy to carry." (Mrs J.D., Chandlers Ford)
