This was the first walking guide for Mallorca, the guide that won Sunflower the Sunday Times "Oscar" for best travel guide - and eventually made the island one of the most popular walking areas in Europe (and a favourite destination for bird-watchers, too). The author has lived on Mallorca for over 30 years and knows the island intimately. This completely revised 7th edition includes newly-drawn maps incorporating the recently inaugurated GR221 ("Drystone Route") - a long-distance walk which is covered almost in its entirety by the 60 long and short day walks in the book. There are also 10 car tours with accompanying fold-out touring map, as well as plans of Palma and Soller, bus, train and boat timetables and panels of information on Mallorcan customs and features of the landscape. A free online update service informs users of any route-change information.

Best walking months are May, June and October, but you can hike on Mallorca all year round, except for July-early September, when it is far too hot. February, for example, can be gorgeous, because all the almond trees will be in blossom.

Where to stay if you plan to walk: Palma, the capital, has bus services to every part of the island so it makes an excellent base for walkers. But if you prefer a more leisurely pace, still with good transport links, consider Soller or Pollença or their respective ports, or certainly somewhere in the western part of the island. (The highest concentration of walks is on the north-west side of the island between Port d'Andratx and Alcudia. East of a line from Palma in the south through Inca to Alcudia in the north, there are only three walks: one at Cala Pi, another at Santa Eugenia and the other at Cala Estreta.)

"What a marvellous walking guide to Mallorca!" (J.L.C., York)

"If you intend to visit the mountain region on a walking holiday, I strongly recommend you plan your trip with Landscapes of Mallorca; I regard it as my constant companion." (East Anglian Daily Times)

"Meticulously detailed routes incredibly useful." (Weekend Telegraph)

"A wonderful guide to walks in Mallorca's mountains." (Sunday Times)
