Walking in Sardinia

SardiniaLandscapes of SARDINIA: walks and car tours

by Andreas Stieglitz

As with all Sunflower books, these are great walking books, and you can use the Sunflower website to check for any updates to the routes before you go on each trip. A great book and great after-sales service from the writers. We did some fantastic walks and you get so much good local information on the region too. Would recommend all Sunflower books. [We also have] the Crete, Majorca and Menorca books… (JJ, Amazon)

A great book!!! I highly recommend it, even if, like me, you are not fluent in English, all terms are easily understandable. (PG, Amazon)

Overview

Sardinia, the second largest island in the Meditarranean, is a countryside lover’s paradise. Touring Sardinia by car, you quickly leave all traces of tourism behind: the six car tours cover about 1600km (1000 miles). The tours are arranged in such a way that they can be combined, allowing you to tour round the whole island. As you tour, explore on foot: walking in Sardinia, crushing the fragrant Mediterranean macchia underfoot, will give you the real flavour of the island. Its scenic diversity ranges from rough and primeval landscapes to gentle golden sand dunes, from scorching rocky plateaux and windswept plains reminiscent of Africa to rolling hills with lush pastures and dense brushwood, from towering mountains cloaked in fine oak woods to a turquoise sea that touches the rocky coast. Colourful rock roses and an extravaganza of wild flowers flourish in spring.

Area covered: the whole island

The best months for walking in Sardinia are September to June

Where to stay

Bosa, Cala Gonone and Santa Maria Navarrese are ideal for those who prefer to be on the coast. If you’re looking for an inland location near the central Gennargentu massif, Aritzo, with its good hotels, is ideal. Note that public transport is limited — you will almost certainly need a hire car to reach most of the walks.

Current update

Sardinia, 4th edition (2010); updated 15/10/2012

Updates for walks and car tours (drives) in Sardinia given below supplement those provided in the guidebook. It is vital that this Update is read in conjunction with the text of the book, but note that the Update applies only to the edition stated and not to any earlier editions. (If you have an older edition of this book you can “upgrade” to the latest edition at half price.)

Information has been forwarded to us by users of the book, and Sunflower Books offers the data in good faith but cannot be held responsible for any misleading or inaccurate content in the Update. Unless indicated otherwise, what appears here has not been verified by the author or publisher, so please allow due caution when new or amended routes are suggested. Each piece of information is dated; bear in mind that some of the older observations may have since been overtaken by events or further changes. If, during your holiday, you are using the current edition of the guide and are able to provide any additional updating to add to this page, we will be pleased to hear from you. Please send information, preferably in hard copy, by post, to Sunflower Books, PO Box 115, Exeter EX2 6YU (or if you prefer, by e-mail, to mail@sunflowerbooks.co.uk).

Walk 4: We could not find the starting point of this walk alltough we drove the road several times. We decided to start from the same point as walk 5 begins. Here there are signs which tell to go to the left for Gola su Gorropu and to the right for Tiscali. (User, 10/12)

Walk 5: The description to the start of the walk assumes that you are approaching from the N along the SS125. If you’re coming from the S you’ll only realise that you’ve missed the turning when you get to Cala Gonone tunnel. In fact, the sign for Gola su Goroppu can only be seen whilst travelling southwards. The minor road leading to the start of the road is 2km north of a derelict (utilities?) red-painted building on the east side of the SS125. There is a road sign indicating the turn off about 50m before reaching it. However, the manoevre requires a very sharp left turn. The parking space recommended has the space for 6 or 7 sensibly parked cars (Sardinians increased that by some non-sensical parking). The road between the parking space and the bridge has seen some upgrading (some concrete sections) and there’s at least double the number of spaces between the place recommended and the bridge itself. The guide mentions the ‘concrete bridge’ which can be easily crossed and there are at least a dozen parking spaces (one area designated as such) along the track to Gola su Goroppu within 200m of the bridge. Unfortunately the local commune has started to levy a charge for entry into the gorge. It’s 3.50 euros and 2.50 for concessions (cash only). For this, you have to endure a rather tedious health and safety and nature talk which takes about 5 minutes. The gorge is impressive, but I don’t agree that it’s “one of the largest clefts in Europe”. There are similar and larger gorges in the Picos, Crete, Mallorca, and of course, the Gorge du Verdon. (User, 6/10)

Walk 7, alternative route: The Sardinia Forestry Commission has signed 76 walks in the island (see http://www.sardegnaambiente.it/foreste/foreste_parchi/sentieri.html ), and using the new footpath 501 above Urzulei (see photo of sign at http://www.peteranne.it/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/sardinia-walking-signs-urzulei-web.jpg ) instead of “Soon cross a small saddle and keep right at the fork, slightly downhill,” you could keep left and follow a lovely path to Fennau and can enter the Codula de sa Mela from the south to make a lovely round walk. + I agree with the suggestion on the update page to follow the 501. We followed the ‘official route’ but got problems at the point where the path peters out in front of a rock, and you have to find your way through bushes and trees. By accident we found the path that was meant, but it took a lot of time. The given time for this walk was not correct. It took us 6,5 hours. (User, 10/12)

Walk 11: Clear waymarking (red/white paint) now continues from Genna Orisa all the way to the summit. (User, 10/12)

Walk 12: At the start the houses have been renumbered. You now descend steps between numbers 44 and 46, not 50 and 52. (User, 10/12)

Walk 13: Having just done this walk and struggled to find the beginning, I thought you might like to know the start is now between houses 44 and 46, rather than 50 and 52! Otherwise, a lovely walk. (User, 10/11) + Short walk: If you want to follow the walk as described, ignore the large Texile sign at the side of the road. This takes you on a flat contouring track which does not meet up with the route till the first T junction mentioned on p 100. (User, 10/12)
