Landscapes of South Africa - the Cape South Africa, covering an area stretching from Cape Point north to the West Coast National Park and east to Wellington. Twenty-three main walks are described in this book, together with a number of options for each. The bulk of the walks are on Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula, the rest further along the southern coast or in the interior: the Boland. All the walks and tours have been written up with access by car from Rondebosch, a suburb some 10km south of Cape Town. It is a convenient centre from several points of view not least its proximity to both mountain and town. "South Africa has become a popular holiday destination and good value for money now, so the mixture of stunning mountains and spectacular coastline is bound to attract more walkers in the future. You know you're not in Europe when you read things like, 'If you meet a troupe of baboons, give them right of way'! The book is illustrated with colour photographs and clear maps. The names on the maps make fascinating reading: Porcupine Buttress and Valley of Isolation conjure up interesting pictures, while places such as Gouda and Nordhoek emphasise the Dutch connection." (Walking Abroad) Best time to visit: March to December Where to Stay: the author recommends the Capetown suburb of Rondebosch as an ideal centre from which most of the walks are easily accessed by car. (A hire car is virtually essential. Very few of the walks can be reached by public transport.)
